Flower Care

Here are a few simple tricks that will help you get the longest enjoyment out of your flowers.

Water

Try to change your flowers’ water daily. It’s always best to use clean lukewarm water, as hot or cold water tends to shock flowers and can result in premature wilting.

Food

When you change the water, we suggest adding some plant food and a flower preservative. Don’t have a flower preservative handy? No problem. Below you will find an old florist recipe for making a homemade flower preservative. Don’t worry, there’s no baking involved. Simply add:

  • 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • ½ teaspoon of chlorine bleach

to a quart of lukewarm water, stir, and you’re set.

Temperature

Flowers thrive at temperatures between 18 and 22°C (65-72°F). We always recommend you keep flowers away from drafts and heat generating appliances.

Other things that bug flowers

Try to keep your flowers away from fruits and vegetables (especially bananas), gas stoves and cigarette smoke, but the best advice we can give you is to remove decaying foliage from the arrangement.

A special tip for roses

If a rose wilts prematurely, remove it from the arrangement and fill your sink with several inches of warm water. While holding the stem under water, cut about one inch from the stem with a sharp knife or shears. Float the rose on the water surface so that the stem end remains slightly below the surface. Within an hour the rose will revive and you can place it back in your arrangement.
